Back in 2012 when the Family Guy slot game debuted at the G2E show, like many fans of the show at the height of its popularity, I was excited to try the new game and after doing so couldn’t wait for it to be released both as a land casino game and, perhaps more importantly, as an online slot game. Fortunately for me, IGT have fully optimised the slot for both no download and mobile play and in all its cliché filled glory, you can play the game for both real cash and in demo mode for pure entertainment.
Ok, I grant the theme will be a little bit risqué for some, though that didn’t stand in the way of the success of either the TV show, or similar slot games like NetEnt’s rather rowdy South Park slot game. Family guy shares some startling similarities with that title, both in the solid use of the shows characters to represent themed bonus features and in the cheeky use of soundbites and animation sequences to give that branded feel to the game.
This is a big step for IGT online away from their older traditional casino titles such as the Wolf Run slot game and the diamond themed series of games which they are known for in the land casino world. As always it’s a real shame US players don’t get to enjoy these games online though the future looks bright for deregulation in the future.
On the Family Guy slot you get a large 5x3 reel set which displays wonderfully online but, perhaps even better on mobile devices. With the cartoon graphics really lending themselves to play on tablets or mobile phones with larger screens. Given mobile slots are often played more for entertainment value and for brief periods, I can see a lower variance slot like this which is packed with bonus action filling that niche function incredibly well.
The animations, sound effects and small win sequences are all so well produced that even the base game is entertaining, which it needs to be. As with many IGT slot games the bonus free spins feature is where the pay-out potential exists and you will find the pickings sparse until you trigger it. Fortunately, when you do, it all gets a lot more promising and even if you miss the spins round, there are several other instant win pick style bonus features which pay-out pretty well if you catch them right.
Branded games rarely have the high variance required to satisfy the high roller player and Family Guy doesn’t make any attempt to pretend to be that kind of slot game. What it is, at heart, is something for fans of the theme to entertain themselves over more formulaic and familiar slots which follow classic themes such as 88 Fortunes for example. This, the game does well and, just like the series, we expect it to be very popular!
